Line Series
In 2012, Samuel devoted each month to a different method of line making. Many of the components of these images are “found” objects. Samuel photographed lines on the streets of Philadelphia and used the photos as the basis for his pictures: Shadowlands, Urban Media, and Zig Zag. In the case of his Rub Ons picture, embossed or three dimensional lines were captured by making rubbings.
The series of line art includes a variety of media: sticks, string, painted lines, photographed shadows, striped cloth, carved lines on wood, graffiti, drawn lines, stains, rubbings, written and found words, and line patterns combining photos and block prints. The variety of media expanded throughout the year and incorporated various techniques such as printmaking, carving, rubbings, ink stains and block prints.
